Small Hydro

Small Hydro (Upto 25MW) The erstwhile Mysore State had an enviable and glorious position of establishing the first major Hydro-electric generating station at Shivasamudram as early as 1902 for commercial operation. On 5th August 1905, Bangalore was electrified by lighting 250 numbers of street lights. The power supply to Bangalore was from Shivasamudram, the first Hydro Electric station installed in 1902

The technology at that time was still in its infancy, even in the advanced countries. It was a record that the longest transmission line, at the highest voltage in the world, was constructed to meet the power needs of mining operations at Kolar Gold Fields.

Karnataka is bestowed with a rich potential for development of 7500 MW of hydroelectric projects, of which only 3400 MW constituting about 45.42% of the potential has been alotted. However, large hydro electric projects are not coming up on account of environmental considerations, difficulties in resettlement of local inhabitants, interstate river water disputes etc. This has underscored the need for small hydro project development (upto 25MW capacity), as they are free from problems that afflict major hydroelectric project. It is unnecessary to stress that small hydroelectric projects have a compassionate effect on the environment; require lesser time and resources from concept to commissioning stage. It is estimated that about 3100 MW of small hydropower potential can be exploited in the state. Such potential exists at the toes of the medium and minor irrigation dams, canal drops, Run of the River and hill streams.

The government has encouraged private sector participation in small hydro power projects. So far the State government has issued capacity allocation for construction of 504 small hydro projects with a total capacity of 3010.25 MW. So far 109 projects with total installed capacity of 903.46 MW have been commissioned.

Karnataka has thus taken a lead in the small hydro segment of the renewable energy sector.
