Karnataka has a vast potential of about 1000 MW for the development of biomass power plants from the surplus biomass available in the state. Till date, for grid connected biomass based power projects through combustion technology, NOC has been issued to the extent of 391.70 MW capacity. Out of this, 139.03 MW capacity projects have been commissioned. At present there are 20 numbers of Biomass power plants are operating in the State

It is noteworthy that many Engineering colleges, Medical colleges and Religious Institutions in the state have set up Biomass gasifier for their captive use. Biomass Energy for Rural India (BERI) has also set up a 500 KW biomass gasifier at Tumakuru district with financial assistance from UNDP, ICEF and government of India & Karnataka.
